BIOCHEMISTRY
Biochemistry - Molecular Basis of Life: McKee & McKee
Quote:
Biochemistry is the investigation of the molecular basis of life. Throughout the history of this scientific discipline, biochemists have worked to reveal the fundamental chemical and physical principles that underlie living processes. Their success is demonstrated in the enormous impact that the biochemical approach has had on the life sciences. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, the depth and breadth of this influence is astonishing. The progress in our understanding of living organisms, already enormous by the early 1990s, is currently being exceeded, in no small measure, because of the spectacular advances in DNA-based technologies that are based on biochemical research. The access that life scientists now have to the genetic information of entire organisms has resulted in previously unimaginable insights into the inner workings of living organisms and the causes of disease. The challenge in life and physical science; education is how to prepare students for careers in diverse fields in which the pace of knowledge accumulation will only accelerate in the foreseeable future. The most important tool that teachers can offer these students is a coherent understanding of biochemistry. The third edition of Biochemistry: The Molecular Basis of Life has been revised and updated to provide a logical and accessible introduction to biochemical principles. Organization and Approach This textbook is designed for life science students and chemistry and other physical science majors. Few assumptions have been made about the chemistry and biology backgrounds the students have. To ensure that all students are sufficiently prepared for acquiring a meaningful understanding of biochemistry, the first four chapters review the principles of relevant topics, such as organic functional groups, noncovalent bonding, thermodynamics, and cell structure. Several themes are introduced in these early chapters and continued throughout the book. Emphasis is placed on the relationship between molecular architecture and the functional properties of biomolecules, and the dynamic, unceasing, and self-regulating nature of living processes. Students are also provided with overviews of the major physical and chemical techniques that biochemists have used to explore life at the molecular level. Table of Contents Part I: Fundamental Concepts 1 Biochemistry: An Introduction 2 Living Cells 3 Water: The Medium of Life 4 Energy Part II: Structures and Metabolism of Proteins, Carbohydrates, and Lipids 5 Amino Acids, Peptides, and Proteins 6 Enzymes 7 Carbohydrates 8 Carbohydrate Metabolism 9 Aerobic Metabolism I: Citric Acid Cycle and Electron Transport 10 Aerobic Metabolism II: Oxidative Phosphorylation and Oxidative Stress 11 Lipids and Membranes 12 Lipid Metabolism 13 Photosynthesis 14 Nitrogen Metabolism I: Synthesis 15 Nitrogen Metabolism II: Degradation 16 Integration of Metabolism Part III: Genetic Information Flow 17 Nucleic Acids 18 Genetic Information and Gene Expression 19 Protein Synthesis 21.1 MB, 774 Pages, DJVU, 2003 credit: alfredpal

Marks’ Basic Medical Biochemistry: A Clinical Approach, 2nd Edition
Marks Basic Medical Biochemistry_A Clinical Approach_CM Smith_ISBN0781721458
Colleen M. Smith PhD
Allan D. Marks MD
Michael A. Lieberman PhD
ISBN: 0-7817-2145-8
Now in its second edition, Basic Medical Biochemistry continues to provide a unique clinically based approach to the subject that is perfect for medical students. The authors use patient vignettes throughout the book to emphasize the importance of biochemistry to medicine, delivering a text that is specifically oriented toward clinical application and understanding.
Patients have unique and humorous names that serve as mnemonics to help students remember the vignettes. Facts and pathways are also emphasized, showing how the underlying biochemistry is related to the body’s overall physiologic functions. The result is a clear, comprehensive, and easy-to-read text that helps medical students understand the all-important role the patient plays in the study of biochemistry.
Section One: Fuel Metabolism
Section Two: Chemical and Biological Foundations of Biochemistry
Section Three: Gene Expression and the Synthesis of Proteins
Section Four: Fuel Oxidation and the Generation of ATP
Section Five: Carbohydrate Metabolism
Section Six: Lipid Metabolism
Section Seven: Nitrogen Metabolism
Section Eight: Tissue Metabolism
NOTE: this archive is a collection of the 49 individual chapters plus TOC. Each is a protected pdf, so they cannot be merged to a single file. But the whole book is represented. Download two files of ~25 MB each

Summary:
The most comprehensive textbook/reference ever to cover the chemical basis of life, the "Green Bible of Biochemistry" has been a well-respected contribution to the field for more than twenty years. The complex structures that make up cells are described in detail, along with the forces that hold them together, and the chemical reactions that allow for recognition, signaling and movement. There is ample information on the human body, its genome, and the action of muscles, eyes, and the brain. The complete set deals with the natural world, treating the metabolism of bacteria, toxins, antibiotics, specialized compounds made by plants, photosynthesis, luminescence of fireflies, among many other topics.
* The most comprehensive biochemistry text reference available on the market
* Organized into two volumes, comprising 32 chapters and containing the latest research in the field
* Biological content is emphasized: for example, macromolecular structures and enzyme action are discussed
