molecular biology of human cancers

Image

Over the last three decades, knowledge on the molecular biology of human cancers has vastly expanded. A host of genes and proteins involved in cancer development and progression have been defined and many mechanisms at the molecular, cellular and even tissue level have been, at least partly, elucidated. Insights have also been gained into the molecular mechanisms underlying carcinogenesis by chemical, physical, and biological agents and into inherited susceptibility to cancer.

Accordingly, Part I of the book presents many of the molecules and mechanisms generally important in human cancers. Following an overview on the cancer problem, individual chapters deal with cancer genetics and epigenetics, DNA damage and repair, oncogenes, tumor suppressors, regulatory pathways in cancer, apoptosis, cellular senescence, tumor invasion, and metastasis.

A consensus is emerging that while these common mechanisms and molecules are all relevant to human cancers, in each cancer type (or even subtype) a selection of them are extremely important. For selected cancers, the route from genetic and epigenetic changes to their biological and clinical behavior can already be traced. Part II of the book presents a broad, but exemplary selection of cancers that serve as paradigms to illustrate this point.

In fact, cancer research has now reached a critical stage, in which the accumulated knowledge on molecular mechanisms is gradually translated into improved prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. The state, pitfalls, and potential of these efforts are summarized in Part III.

More than ever, cancer research is now an interdisciplinary effort which requires a basic knowledge of commonly used terms, facts, issues, and concepts. The aim of this book is to provide advanced students and practitioners of different disciplines with this basis, bridging the gap between standard textbooks of molecular biology, pathology, and
oncology on the one hand and the specialized cancer literature on the other.

Jay A. Siegel, Geoffrey C. Knupfer, Pekka J. Saukko, "Encyclopedia of Forensic Sciences", Elsevier | 2000 Year | ISBN: 0122272153 | PDF | ~75 Mb | 1600Pages

“ The Encyclopedia of Forensic Sciences is the first resource to provide comprehensive coverage of the core theories, methods, techniques, and applications employed by forensic scientists. One of the more pressing concerns in forensic science is the collection of evidence from the crime scene and its relevance to the forensic analysis carried out in the laboratory. The Encyclopedia will serve to inform both the crime scene worker and the laboratory worker of their protocols, procedures, and limitations. The more than 200 articles contained in the Encyclopedia form a repository of core information that will be of use to instructors, students, and professionals in the criminology, legal, and law enforcement communities.

The Double Helix : A Personal Account of the Discovery of the DNA

ISBN: 074321630X
Title: The Double Helix : A Personal Account of the Discovery of the Structure of DNA
Author: James D. Watson
Publisher: Touchstone

Quote:
Richard Feynman He has described admirably how it feels to have that frightening and beautiful experience of making a scientific discovery. Book Description By identifying the structure of DNA, the molecule of life, Francis Crick and James Watson revolutionized biochemistry and won themselves a Nobel Prize. At the time, Watson was only twenty-four, a young scientist hungry to make his mark. His uncompromisingly honest account of the heady days of their thrilling sprint against other world-class researchers to solve one of science's greatest mysteries gives a dazzlingly clear picture of a world of brilliant scientists with great gifts, very human ambitions, and bitter rivalries. With humility unspoiled by false modesty, Watson relates his and Crick's desperate efforts to beat Linus Pauling to the Holy Grail of life sciences, the identification of the basic building block of life. Never has a scientist been so truthful in capturing in words the flavor of his work

The clear and well-written articles are informative and should meet the needs of most students. In addition, users will appreciate the thorough indexing and cross-referencing, which make navigation straightforward. Though it has more extensive coverage, World of Genetics [RBB Je 1 & 15 02] lacks suggested readings at the end of each entry and is not as attractively designed. It is aimed at the high-school level and up, while Encyclopedia of Genet ics (Salem, 1999) is designed for use by undergraduates and others with a general understanding of science. Genetics would be a useful resource for middle- and high-school libraries as well as undergraduate and public libraries.

“ Today, for patients of any age, a "panoramic" radiograph that allows high diagnostic reliability with minimum radiation exposure must be acknowledged as the standard of care. The new, more medically and legally "responsible" strategy for examination of patients is closely intertwined with a basic principle of patient care. Panoramic radiograph is rapidly becoming a meaningful and normal component of dental practice-oriented "prevention". This Atlas presents the proper use of optimum radiographic exposure and contemporary techniques for today's dental office. Emphasis is placed on the reliable recognition of normal structures in the projected space and clear differentiation of normal features from pathological radiographic signs. These major topics of fundamental importance for correct interpretation are treated more extensively. The section on diagnosis deals in depth with the typical radiographic manifestations of frequently occurring pathological processes. Inherent in that section of the book is the basic understanding that the radiopathologic manifestation of one and the same lesion may vary considerably depending on the patient's age and sex, on the phase of development of the lesion at the time of documentation, on the localization within different surrounding structures, and according to actual histologic features of the lesion. ”

While medical and hygienic developments have driven down the mortality rates of infectious diseases, pathogenic microorganisms are still a major factor in everyday clinical practice. They are still the most frequent cause of death in Third World countries. New and incurable infectious diseases are a worldwide problem. It is inescapable, therefore, that modern medicine must redouble its efforts to understand the relationship between microorganisms and humans and continue to lead the search for new therapies.

The following five subject areas are covered:

Immunology
Bacteriology
Mycology
Virology
Parasitology

This book provides a clearly focused and richly detailed review of the entire field of medical microbiology.

It is both a textbook for students of medicine and dentistry and a useful companion for medical technicians and laboratory assistants, both at school and in the laboratory. It will also serve as a handy work of reference for clinical practitioners.

The book is structured with teachability in mind: The many color illustrations and microscopic images render complex themes readily accessible. Summaries at the beginning of every chapter, a color-coded reference guide and detailed diagnostic tables make this an excellent sourcebook for rapid learning and quick reference. A list of important internet addresses in the appendix will help the book's users keep abreast of cutting-edge research.

BIOCHEMISTRY

Image
Biochemistry - Molecular Basis of Life: McKee & McKee
Quote:
Biochemistry is the investigation of the molecular basis of life. Throughout the history of this scientific discipline, biochemists have worked to reveal the fundamental chemical and physical principles that underlie living processes. Their success is demonstrated in the enormous impact that the biochemical approach has had on the life sciences. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, the depth and breadth of this influence is astonishing. The progress in our understanding of living organisms, already enormous by the early 1990s, is currently being exceeded, in no small measure, because of the spectacular advances in DNA-based technologies that are based on biochemical research. The access that life scientists now have to the genetic information of entire organisms has resulted in previously unimaginable insights into the inner workings of living organisms and the causes of disease. The challenge in life and physical science; education is how to prepare students for careers in diverse fields in which the pace of knowledge accumulation will only accelerate in the foreseeable future. The most important tool that teachers can offer these students is a coherent understanding of biochemistry. The third edition of Biochemistry: The Molecular Basis of Life has been revised and updated to provide a logical and accessible introduction to biochemical principles. Organization and Approach This textbook is designed for life science students and chemistry and other physical science majors. Few assumptions have been made about the chemistry and biology backgrounds the students have. To ensure that all students are sufficiently prepared for acquiring a meaningful understanding of biochemistry, the first four chapters review the principles of relevant topics, such as organic functional groups, noncovalent bonding, thermodynamics, and cell structure. Several themes are introduced in these early chapters and continued throughout the book. Emphasis is placed on the relationship between molecular architecture and the functional properties of biomolecules, and the dynamic, unceasing, and self-regulating nature of living processes. Students are also provided with overviews of the major physical and chemical techniques that biochemists have used to explore life at the molecular level. Table of Contents Part I: Fundamental Concepts 1 Biochemistry: An Introduction 2 Living Cells 3 Water: The Medium of Life 4 Energy Part II: Structures and Metabolism of Proteins, Carbohydrates, and Lipids 5 Amino Acids, Peptides, and Proteins 6 Enzymes 7 Carbohydrates 8 Carbohydrate Metabolism 9 Aerobic Metabolism I: Citric Acid Cycle and Electron Transport 10 Aerobic Metabolism II: Oxidative Phosphorylation and Oxidative Stress 11 Lipids and Membranes 12 Lipid Metabolism 13 Photosynthesis 14 Nitrogen Metabolism I: Synthesis 15 Nitrogen Metabolism II: Degradation 16 Integration of Metabolism Part III: Genetic Information Flow 17 Nucleic Acids 18 Genetic Information and Gene Expression 19 Protein Synthesis 21.1 MB, 774 Pages, DJVU, 2003 credit: alfredpal

Review:
Reviewer: Jennifer Keller (Washington, DC)
This book is great. If you have ever had to weed through the official SPSS manual or other SPSS books, you would know how difficult it is to find out how to do simple tasks without having to read a mountain of literature. This book simplifies everything. It tells you (1) how to do it, (2) how to interpret your output, and (3) all in plain English. The book has minimal formulas (but tells you the meaning of what you're doing). Finally, the chapters are organized in a logical way.

Book Introduction

Earthquakes, floods, drought, and other natural hazards cause tens of
thousands of deaths, hundreds of thousands of injuries, and billions of
dollars in economic losses each year around the world. Many billions of
dollars in humanitarian assistance, emergency loans, and development aid
are expended annually. Yet efforts to reduce the risks of natural hazards
remain largely uncoordinated across different hazard types and do not
necessarily focus on areas at highest risk of disaster.

Natural Disaster Hotspots presents a global view of major natural disaster
risk hotspots ¡V areas at relatively high risk of loss from one or more
natural hazards. It summarizes the results of an interdisciplinary analysis
of the location and characteristics of hotspots for six natural hazards ¡V
earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, floods, drought, and cyclones. Data on
these hazards are combined with state-of-the-art data on the subnational
distribution of population and economic output and past disaster losses to
identify areas at relatively high risk from one or more hazards.
